I totally understand, and I hope a solution that satisfies (almost) everyone
can be found.

But let's also not forget that something is already broken here.  MySQL is =
very
popular, and not working with its default password scheme is a kind of 'bro=
ken'
too.

Perhaps some numerical quantification would help measure the tradeoffs here=
