Has the cdrom ever been able to boot anything? If not check your bios
config to see if it is an option as a boot device. In the past the to
boot from a freebsd cd, the cd had to be a slave on the primary IDE
channel. Don't know if this is still the case. You should not have to
remove anything from the default kernel to get the machine up and running.
Are you getting to the sysinstall installation screen? The install has
to get to the sysinstall screens before it even tries to access the cdrom.

Don't configure the kernel, and while it is loading the kernel, watch for
atapci0 and acd0, the acd0 or acd1 will be your cdrom. If you see this
then the kernel saw your cdrom.

If you have internet access you don't need the cd anyway, you can install
via ftp, if you can get to the sysinstall screens. On the main screen
choose "Standard" and it will walk you through the rest.

Well I tried the short question now here is the long question since the
documentation is incorrect (?) and there is no such thing as an
'install.bat' :)

I have an IBM Aptiva 2159. Which is a split system. The floppy and
CD-ROM are in a desktop piece and connected to the main tower via what
looks like (but probably is not) a 50 SCSI cable. The CD-ROM is set to
Master and probably on it's own IDE channel. I think the cable thing
though is interfering w/the kernel finding it?

I have downloaded the FreeBSD 4.3 RELEASE image and created a bootable
CD. It boots in my IBM Thinkpad 600E but not the Aptiva, circa 1997.

Therefore, I created the boot floppies, kern and mfsroot.

I am able to boot from the floppies. I am able to configure the kernel.
To configure the kernel I have to delete 6 of the 7 possible network
drivers. I left the IBM drive for no particular reason.

This is what I see when I boot from the floppies...

BTX loader 1.00 BTX version is 1.01
   Console: internal video/keyboard
BIOS drive A: is disk 0
BIOS drive C: is disk 1
   BIOS 639kB/97280kB available memory

The reason I believe that the CR-ROM is not recognized is b/c I do NOT
see a line say something like...

BIOS drive D: is disk 2

Q: Should I move the CR-ROM into the tower and make it a slave on the
same IDE channel as the HD?

Like I said I am able to boot from the floppies and configure the kernel
but when I select 'Q' and 'Y' to save my changes, the following is
displayed but nothing else happens?

Q: Is the kernel looking for the CD-ROM to finish the installation?

Sorry this is so long but this is getting very frustrating.

Thanks!

S
