You might keep an eye on geeks.com. They sell new/surplus/used stuff, and I have seen now-old used ThinkPads (e.g. T21 or A21) for under $400, if I recall correctly. I used to have a T21 (800MHz) at work, and it still had the 'eraser' type built-in mouse. Gary
