Kill off the hald process, then run /usr/local/etc/rc.d/dbus start. You should see a dbus-daemon process running with a --system argument. If not, not, you may have a problem with dbus. You can try running /usr/local/bin/dbus-daemon --system --nofork and see if you get any errors. If dbus-daemon starts up correctly, start up polkitd with /usr/local/etc/rc.d/polkitd start. If that works, then start hald. When everything is up, you should be able to run lshal, and actually see a device list.
