How can I use it to discover the current settings?

For instance, is it possible to switch to some particular vidcontrol
mode (e.g. white-on-black 80x25 normal cursor), and then return to the
previous settings?  This is the sort of thing I am interested in
doing.  If the underlying ioctls were documented I might stand a
chance....
