I am surprised that the make symlink > is the only one that tripped you up. :) Well, there are only a few other utilities in /usr/local/bin which replace the ones in /usr/bin, such as GNU awk, find, m4, and Perl 5.0, with the exception of Perl I believe these are compatable with the default FreeBSD binary.
