Hello. I'm trying to install FreeBSD in an AMD K6II-500 system with a PC-100 motherboard (atapci0: <SiS 5591 ATA33 controller>) and an old Quantum LPS420 hard disk (1010 cylinders, 16 heads, 51 sectors per track, operating in PIO mode 3, if it helps). During the installation process, I got an error when sysinstall tried to format the disk and create partitions. I inserted the fixit floppy disk and issued the following commands: # dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/rda1 count=2 # disklabel -Brw ad0 auto and got the message disklabel: ioctl DIOCWLABEL: Operation not supported by device I even tried with an old FreeBSD 3.3 install floppy set and got the same results. I'm sure the disk is not demaged because I could fill it with zeros with # dd if=/dev/zero bs=/dev/wd0 bs=417792 Moving the same disk to another machine with: atapci0: <Intel PIIX3 ATA controller> I could write a disk label without problems, but moving the disk back to the first machine I could not even read the label! Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -- Carlos A. M. dos Santos Federal University of Pelotas Meteorological Research Center Av.
