In the 2 years that I tried to use it, it never worked right. Please don't consider that program a "real" config utility. "xf86config" worked perfectly fine, on the other hand. I suppose since it's not GUI it's not a "real configuration utility". In any case, XFree86 4 seems to have "xf86cfg", but I've only used it once or twice. X -configure usually works.
