And what it returns if you type 'www' ? It must be shurtcuts somethere.
May be, it is you browser functionality - fast find in previously
visited 
URL's. Netscape have such thing (but it rarely works good).

And it can't be DNS-specific functionality. Just think about traffic
needed
to recursiwely search in domain tree from the root. May be, Mac client
library make search in previous-cached requests for uncomplete
addresses,
but it seems not wise. Or you have some analog of /etc/hosts file
somethere,
where shortcuts was written.
