I am using:
wdc0: unit 0 (wd0): <IBM-DHEA-38451>
wd0: 8063MB (16514064 sectors), 16383 cyls, 16 heads, 63 S/T, 512 B/S
and
wdc0: unit 1 (wd0): <IBM-DTTA-351680>
wd1: 16124MB (33022080 sectors), 32760 cyls, 16 heads, 63 S/T, 512 B/S

Both work fine under 2.2.8-RELEASE, 3.0-RELEASE and 3.1-STABLE.
What version are you using, what happens when you boot, etc.
