This is a red herring. The actual problem is that the s/iconv/giconv/ substitution touches too many files and triggers an autoshit build cascade. I noticed this when I added the substitution, but it happened to work for me. Sorry, I was tired. I should have realized how easily this would break. I have now limited the change to the actual configure script and a header file, which should fix this.
