I would suggest going with a combination of a DLT drive and amanda backup 
software (currently version 2.4.2p2).  The DLT drive can be:

DLT4000 20/40GB
DLT7000 35/70GB
DLT8000 40/80GB
SuperDLT        110/220GB

For any of these, you would need a SCSI card.


As for the software, the amanda software is free, fairly mature and part of 
the ports.
