Not sure about Darwin specifically, but FreeBSD has been used with Mach for quite some time - before the Darwin project. Mach is only a microkernel and lacks some of the modules a full kernel needs (e.g., filesystems). It has been used with the LITES userland process that is actually a modified FreeBSD kernels that supplies a UNIX emulation layer.
