DOS filesystems and FreeBSD can coexist, but you have to install FreeBSD in it's own partition (we call slice) type. > I am completely confused and frustrated, thinking that I can't install > FreeBSD on partition D:\. What you want to do is delete the extended partition which contains d: (I assume C: is a DOS Primary) then install FreeBSD in the empty space.
