Sun has licensed the JDK 1.2 sources to *me*, for the purposes of porting it to Linux. I can sublicense the source code, and selectively the Java Compatibility Kit, to others for the purposes of developing Linux ports. I'm pretty sure that the license I have would not allow me to sublicense the sources to the FreeBSD community for the purposes of porting to FreeBSD :-(.
