(in single-user, without swapping, I was able to see an error from driver, after that it resets the devices (effectively disabling them), and so all disk accesses give me 'I/O error'. In multi-user, I have catched a fast scrolling horde of swapper messages about errors on swap device (no doubt it rebooted shortly).
