Both Thomas Dickey's current xterm #121 and the one that comes with
XFree86 3.3.5 (built on 1999-09-10 from ports on -CURRENT).

That's an entirely different thing. Sheldon suggested to set TERM
in .xsession/.xinitrc so later spawned xterms would inherit the
value. (They don't.) You are clobbering TERM in the shell spawned
inside an xterm.
