OK -

 In the gettimeofday() call; it returns a structure that has two
values.  First, the number of seconds since 1970.  The second field
is the number of microseconds.

 Certainly, the number of microseconds since 1970 is larger than
an int...  so; I take it this is the number of microseconds for
the current day... is that right?
