1) If you are using 10Base-T (flat) cable, did you twist it 180 degrees?
2) If you are using coaxial cable, are both ends terminated?

If neither of these solves your problem, and the cables are securely
connected, then I suggest you spend some time searching the questions
archive on freebsd.org for the error message you have received... many
people have been through this, and the problem has been solved many
times.
