Sendmail works ok for the bulk of installs. Most people make the change for a specific reason: be it performance, better UCE control, easier configuration, security, and so on. I'll go out on a line and say people who do opt for a repalcement MTA don't go back to sendmail in many cases. Qmail VS Postfix VS Exim VS Foo: download each and give a test drive. I went with Postfix, which suited the bulk of my requirements well. I've heard good things about Qmail as well. Not too much in the way of Exim, however.
