In that case, md(4) is wrong:

des@aes ~% current md_root
src/sys/dev/md/md.c: SYSINIT(md_root, SI_SUB_MOUNT_ROOT, SI_ORDER_FIRST, md_takeroot, NULL);
src/sys/i386/conf/NOTES: # images of type mfs_root or md_root.
