[3]When did IDE drives first come out?  

Tandy designed the IDE-XT connector into all of the PCs it shipped for
the fall of 1988.  Since Compaq/Conner had them at least a year earlier,
I would say that they have been around in limited use since 1986.

The IDE-AT interface (or what we call simply IDE today) has been around
since 1988/1989.
