Hello Jean-Marc, 
I've tried your XFree86-4.2.0 version and it didn't managed to compile it, I 
have the following error messages :

looking into patch-f it tries to patch lines 410 and above of compose.dir 
which contains ~300 lines !?! Weird ! Even by hand I can't patch it...
Did anyone noticed this ?
