you say "very few patches"...  how about the mandatory appletalk patches
in the 2.2.5 ERRATA.TXT file from the ftp site? 

also.. sounds like your smbd or nmbd is doing a name lookup on something
external to your site..
check your config file for bad hostnames or similar.
