PC hardware can only boot partitions located within the first GB of your
hard disk. A working scheme is

slice1: 256MB FreeBSD root
slice2: 4GB Windows C: drive
slice3: 4GB FreeBSD /usr, /var, /tmp
slice4: extended Windows drive D:,  more extended partitions can be
trown in here, too.
