About three years ago I modified lprps to open a socket to communicate
with the printer, do accounting, error collection, etc. It's even
easier than you think (replace the tty open() with socket()), but I
can try to dig up the sources if you really want (warning: this was on
SunOS 4.1.1, though, plus had several mods for my accounting system
and user consultant beeper to tell them to put more paper in the
printers).
