Thanks to all for their patient and courteous answers. At this point it is obvious I did not pay nearly enough attention to the first sentence in the second paragraph of 11.3.1.4.1 Naming the Printer in the Handbook: "At least one of the printers specified in the /etc/printcap should have the alias lp." Which does make me curious: Under what circumstances might it be useful to give more than one of the printers the alias lp, and what would happen it one did? Which one would get used for a given job? -LenZ-
