My suggestion would be:
i)	Lie about the Hsync/VertRefresh parameters as necessary - they don't seem
to make much difference - although at least one person has reported blowing
a laptop screen, so I wouldn't advise going beserk...
ii)	Omit the specifications for the "standard" modes, and it'll use the
	built-ins.
This works fine for 16 bit XGA for me:
    HorizSync 24-80
    VertRefresh 39-80
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "536x344" "640x480" "320x240" "352x240"
 "352x280" "352x288" "536x344"
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
(The "odd" modes are only there for full-screen movie playing)
ObDisclaimer: It's your screen, not mine. These work for me... :)
Cheers,
AS
