I have done this on several 2.2-STABLE systems. You'll need to patch adduser.perl, rmuser.perl, param.h, stdio.h, and utmp.h. In order to keep the src patched for long usernames when upgrading via cvsup, I created a Makefile and patches that will change the above files.
