There is an error in newfs(8) also; it just isn't meaningful: first cylinder group ran out of space write error: 0 newfs: wtfs - writecombine: Read-only file system The usual procedure for creating a memory disk is: 1. Create it with mdconfig(8) 2. Label it with disklabel(8) 3. Format it with newfs(8) By having the error message in mdconfig(8), you avoid having to do step 1, 2 and 3, only to find out you made an error at step 1.
