You can't do this!  You need an X server running first.  If you run
startx, then run gnome-session from an xterm, it should work.  As to why
GDM is not working, I can't help you.  It works for me with the default
configuration.

Following the instructions worked for me.  I use gdm, and I have never
had this problem.
