Go to Walnut Creek on the Web (www.cdrom.com) or get there via www.freebsd.org and order The Complete FreeBSD by Greg Lehey, and get the four CDs with it. This book will give you most of the initial info you need. I would supplement with UNIX SYSTEM ADMINISTRATION HANDBOOK by Nemeth, Snyder, Seebass. You should also get a catalog from O'Reilly & Associates at www.ora.com They began publishing "nutshell" handbooks many years ago, that get right to the point. I've been around unix for a long, long time. I was ecstatic to get it for free (well, I bought the book too).
