It's getting to the point that the port should install 'make fetch;  make
makesum' into your crontab every two weeks..

Has the author of the package never considered the problems with this ?
Might they be open to say assigning some arbitary number (even if it just
goes up by one each release) and symlinking it to the current release when
it's current, and then moving the old file to the same name before a new
one goes up on the FTP site ?
