I'd say you are; in unfortunate case our logic behing DESKTOP_ENTRIES does indeed support applications only, IMHO it should be corrected or augmented to support both usages. As for Categories, I'd google what other distributions that install files under ${PREFIX}/share/xsessions put there. ./danfe
