Just to put my problem to bed.
Andy was right in that the problem was in resolv.conf.  I had somehow got
completely the wrong IP addresses in here.  Ny provider has now reset the
addresses and everything is working OK.

Thanks to everyone for their patience and help - I've certainly learnt from all
your comments.
