Sure thing, here is the file.  But the line I added (right at the =
bottom) is
commented out. BTW I am running 5.1 release.  I also get operator not =
found
when it tries to run the second entry.

I'd say you should post the new line you added to cron. Sounds like
you have the formatting incorrectlying, and it is trying to run a
bogus command called either 'cron' or 'root'.
