Well, opionions are extremely varied on this one :))) with kern.maxproc=1000 in systctl.conf, I get this after booting. kern.maxproc: 532 kern.maxprocperuid: 1000 Bumping kern.maxproc is said to be touchable only via MAXUSERS and a custom kernel.
