Total shot in the dark here, but I had this once, and it turned out to be a
flaky hard drive and/or a bad BIOS setting for the hard drive geometry.

anyone? 

i tried reloading again with no luck.  tried all kinds of different 
bios settings, too.

it still hangs at the boot manager.
