Any book on UNIX C and C++ should be applicable.  Our compiler is gcc
(the GNU C Compiler), so books referring to that compiler would be
best.  "Practical C Programming" and "Practical C++ Programming" from
O'Reilly, both by Steve Oualline, seem reasonable books.
