It isn't a HOWTO, but the best sed documentation I've ever read is in the book ``Unix Text Processing'' by Dougherty and O'Reilly. I think it's out of print, but you can download it in PDF format from O'Reilly for free. It also has excellent documentation on quite a few other *nix utilities, and is one of those books that I think should be on every *nix hackers bookshelf along with Kernighan and Pike's ``Unix Programming Environment''.
