You may want to try editing the Makefile. This looks suspicious:

>.ifdef(WITH_KERNPPP)
>CONFIGURE_ARGS+=3D        --with-bsdppp
>.endif

I was under the impression that --with-bsdppp was for userland PPP
in which case the ifdef seems to be the wrong way round.
