Thanks for the help recently in regards to the XFree86 config. It has helped me make some serious progress. I can't say about the misplaced text yet, but I know I have gotten rid of the strange blue line down the center of my screen. This is what I did: I read any and all info I could grep on "ATI Rage" in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/. Including README.r128, README.ati and README.DRI. I found that the best way to configure for this card is to just run (as root) XFree86 -configure. XFree86-4 does a VERY nice job of probing out this card. The new XF86Config had some very good details about the card and the monitor. The monitor probing was a nice surprise. Anyway, I also borrowed an XF86Config-4 from a coworker running XF86-4 on Linux. From this, I borrowed the modeline settings. When I ran XFree86 -xf86config /root/XF86Config.new I got a nice clean, well centered and not very exciting grey grid. With NO blue line, no 'crawling pixel syndrome' etc. So I assumed the whole thing was kopacetic. So, I re-enabled xdm from /etc/ttys, and dropped to single, back to multi, and boom. This is what I see: Aug 9 13:56:32 leblanc init: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/ttyv8, sleeping 30 secs And I haven't a darn clue how to fix this. I don't know if it will help, but I am attaching my XF86Config file. Thanks for any ideas.
