Bzip is an unattractive alternative to gzip for a number of reasons:

 - It's significantly slower in most cases.
 - It's a memory pig.
 - The only code for handling bzip-compressed data is bzip, which is
   GPL'd.
 - The author admits to uncertainty regarding the legal status of the 
   code.

Try /usr/ports/archivers/bzip2.
