No clue about this. This is probably due to the fact that gdm is an 'interactive' package/port - it displays a dialog asking confirmation before the install. sysinstall has some problems with interactive packages, as has been discussed on several of the mailing lists lately - it runs the 'make install', either redirecting its output to another console (during a first-time install), or not at all; and even if the output goes to another console, it does not really allow the user to give any input. Thus, any confirmations during a package install cause sysinstall to hang, waiting for 'dialog' to finish, which it won't. Unfortunately, switching to another VT and killing the dialog process will not work - it exits with a non-zero exit code, thus making the install script think you've answered 'no' to the 'are you sure' question.
