Doh!  You are correct.  Don't know how I missed that.  Guess I get the
pointy hat for today.

So I fixed it in /etc/crontab as follows:

# rotate log files every hour, if necessary
0       *       *       *       *       root    newsyslog -a ./bak/

Which, according to that little part of the manpage I brainfarted
over, should cause all backups, gzipped or otherwise (the binaries
aren't compressed) to be saved in a local bak/ directory.
