I usually stop all non-system-essential running processes (mail servers, 
web servers, inetd, etc) and make it so the system isn't running more 
then sshd and init when I do the installworld/kernel install process. 
But that's just me.  I don't think i have ever ran into a problem thus 
far, running since 2.2.8 - 4.3-STABLE
