If it's a new install of X you need to run 'XF86Setup' or 'xf86config' to setup and configure the server (basically to tell it what video card you have, what keyboard, mouse etc.) - part of the process is creating a link from your X-Server (e.g. /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA) to '/usr/X11R6/bin/X'... 'startx'expects the 'current' X-Server to be symlinked to the 'magical' X file...
