The sparc port is in such infancy that a general agreement on sun4m vs sun4u was never reached as best as I can rememeber. NetBSD has good pre Ultra support but even they don't seem to have much activity on the Ultra stuff. I was going to try installing NetBSD on a Ultra 200/E but there is no support for the fast ethernet chip. Interestingly NetBSD sparc now supports netbooting the Javastation 1 hardware. I don't own one but they can be found on Ebay for $50. Makes a really cheap development platform. They are sun4m arch.
