Why on earth is your kernel on the C partition?  It should be on the a
partition.  Did you disklabel  your machine in a wierd way?  Can I see
your /etc/fstab?

The bootblocks figure out which slice to use automatically; thus why you
have to be careful having two FreeBSd slices on one disk.
