MPlayer currently doesn't build with FreeType support:
font_load_ft.c:30:35: fontconfig/fontconfig.h: No such file or directory
A possible solution is to patch MPlayer-1.0pre8/libvo/Makefile to read:
CFLAGS += ${X11BASE}/include
